Are IPads & IPhones Good Gifts for Kids?

What do children age six to twelve want most this holiday season? According to a new report from The Nielsen Company,
iPads, iPod Touches, and iPhones top the electronics wish list. However, those clamoring to stuff their kids' holiday stockings with the latest electronic gadgets would do well to ponder experts' warnings before buying one.

Few people appreciate that all of these wireless devices come with manufacturers' fine print warnings not to hold them next to an adult body, or that
controlled studies show that microwave radiation from cell phones weaken the brain's protective barrier, and that according to a recently published scientific report from Environmental Health Trust (EHT), children's heads absorb twice as much microwave radiation from cell phones as adults.

In addition, radiation from cell phones carried in shirts or pants pockets of adults is four to seven times higher than the guidelines set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. For the smaller bodies of children, of course, levels would be even much greater.

The reason for the discrepancy, EHT says, is that the process to determine radiation from cell phones is modeled on a 6-foot 2-inch tall, 220-pound man, with an eleven-pound head. Because this large skull represents only about three percent of the population, the test cannot accurately predict the radiation exposure of the other 97 percent, including children, nor does it even try to estimate exposures from pocket use.

"The standard for cell phones has been developed based on old science, old models and old assumptions about how we use cell phones, and that's why they need to change and protect our children and grandchildren," said Dr. Devra Davis, EHT founder and Healthy Child Healthy Word Advisory Board member.

Dr. Davis also calls parents' attention to another iPad fine print warning that states, "a small percentage of people may be susceptible to blackouts or seizures (even if they have never had one before) when exposed to flashing lights or light patterns such as when playing games or watching videos... Discontinue use of iPad and consult a physician if you experience headaches, blackouts, seizures, convulsion, eye or muscle twitching, loss of awareness, involuntary movement, or disorientation. To reduce risk of headaches, blackouts, seizures and eyestrain, avoid prolonged use, hold iPad some distance from your eyes, use iPad in a well-lit room, and take frequent breaks."

Consumers can find this and more on the iPad safety pamphlet. "Whoever wrote this probably had in mind the adult who can fork over $400 to $500 for the iPad," advises Dr. Davis. "Yet nowadays, even babies and toddlers are learning to read from wired devices and falling asleep to white noise played from phones placed under their pillows. A child's brain, healthy or otherwise, is cased in a thinner skull; that's why they absorb more microwave radiation. The brains of children with learning problems, autism or other neurological disorders may be more vulnerable to damage than those of their healthy friends and family members."

The iPad safety advice doesn't consider these issues, but does include information about exposure to radiofrequency energy. The pamphlet notes, "If you are...concerned about exposure to RF energy, you can further limit your exposure by limiting the amount of time using iPad WiFi +3G in wireless mode...and by placing more distance between your body and iPad Wi-Fi +3G."

"There's no denying these gadgets are fun; my kids love them too," says Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Executive Director and CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World. "But these technologies are developing faster than our ability to understand potential health impacts. We're not asking parents to not buy or use them, we're simply asking them to take precautions. It's better to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to our children's health."

Here are six easy steps you can take to protect your family:

1. Use a head set. Using a speaker, hands-free device, or earphones when speaking on a cell phone distances it from the body and head and minimizes your exposure to radiation.

2. Don't carry a cell phone on your body. Even when a cell phone is not in use, it emits radiation.

3. Beware of a weak signal. When a cell phone is in standby mode or when the signal strength is weak or blocked, exposure to radiation increases. Limit your use at this time.

4. Limit children's use. Studies consistently show that children are especially vulnerable to the effects of cell phone radiation. Generally, the younger the child, the more at risk they are.

5. Don't leave a cell phone on your nightstand or near your sleeping child.
You may be sleeping, but your cell phone is busy at work emitting radiation.

6. If your child is using a smart phone, iPad or iPod Touch to play games, turn off the wi-fi feature. You can also put it on "flight" or "off-line" mode to reduce emissions.

New Version of Google Maps Brings Indoor Floor Plans to Your Phone?

Google's Maps team has made fantastic advances in surveying and mapping seemingly every square inch of navigable ground on the planet. But for mobile users, those maps have always stopped just short of indoor spaces -- until now.

Google Maps 6.0 for Android launched Tuesday with a bold initiative: indoor mapping. Partnering at launch with a selection of businesses and public service structures, the new mobile Maps version allows users to see the entire layout of a mapped building, switch between floor plans if the structure has multiple levels, and locate indoor points of interest like retail stores, bathrooms and ATMs.

Obviously, indoor mapping is only useful when the building you're navigating is big enough to warrant it.
To this end, Google has partnered with more than 25 major businesses that handle large crowds on a regular basis -- major travel sites like San Francisco International and Chicago's O'Hareairports, as well as giant retailers like Macy's and Bloomingdale's.

Considering the layers of thick concrete and steel holding up some of these buildings, it's been difficult for Google to get its location-aware technology up to snuff.

"GPS is unreliable and doesn't work well indoors," said Maps project manager Steve Lee in an interview. "We used similar information to how we've implemented the navigation 'blue dot' feature in the past, and we've been able to improve the accuracy indoors, at an accuracy of about 5 to 10 meters."

While half of the initiative begins in U.S. structures, Google is simultaneously launching in Japan, covering Tokyo's massive underground subway network and retail shopping centers (an area where new visitors definitely need a map).

While version 6.0 isn't covering U.S. transit, Lee says the Japanese transit coverage "can give us a sense for what's in store for the future."

While it's just a beginning, Google has also launched a beta tool that allows businesses to upload their own floor plans to the Maps database.

Slowly but surely, Google hopes to entice more businesses and major indoor areas of interest -- both small and large -- to opt in for indoor mapping. Of course, these are private spaces, not freely accessible public roads, so it's an initiative for the long haul.

The update is currently available in the Android Market for phones and tablets running Android version 2.1 and up.

5 Great Games For Story Lovers

1.The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Rated M, $60

The epic medieval role-playing game "Skyrim" is so full of story you could spend months on end trying to get to the bottom of it all. Just to start with, there is the enthralling main story to dive into a tale about a kingdom in the grips of a civil war during a time when dragons have also suddenly reappeared. You, of course, play the protagonist — the "dragonborn" hero whose coming was foretold.

But there is so much happening beyond this main plotline it's hard to know where to start. The numerous side quests are filled with tales of intrigue, treachery and adventure of all sorts. Want a vampire story? It's in there. How about a story about werewolves? That too.

And as if that wasn't enough, throughout this digital world you'll find books to read that tell the tales of various people and various events that have happened during Skyrim's history. This library alone could keep you occupied for days or weeks on end.

If you know someone who enjoys George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, then it's a good bet "Skyrim" will be a big hit with them.

2.Assassin’s Creed: Revelations — PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Rated M, $50

If the gamer on your holiday shopping list is the kind of person who'd enjoy an epic story that weaves the past and present together into one thrilling, history-and-globe-spanning adventure  then look no further than this fourth game in the "Assassin's Creed" main series.

"Revelations" drops players into an ambitious tale about a man and two of his ancestors caught up in an ancient war between the Templars and the Assassins. It's a story that's set both in modern times as well as in ancient Constantinople.

Part historical epic, part sci-fi brain bender, "Revelations" delivers a story filled with vibrant characters and an abundance of big ideas. In short, it's the kind of story you'll happily lose yourself in.

3.L.A. Noire — Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Rated M, $40

Murder, betrayal, drugs and corruption  the open-world action adventure known as "L.A. Noire" has all of this in spades plus a cool old-school 1947 Los Angeles setting that just begs to be explored.

The game drop you into the shoes of a cop returned from World War II  a cop who must try to get the bottom of a series of crimes using his wits, his observational skills and his ability to get information out of people.

This is a story filled to the brim with unique, well-drawn characters stunningly rendered thanks to some amazing motion-capture technology and superb voice acting. In fact, "L.A. Noire" does such a good job weaving an intrigue-filled tale in the gritty film noir style that, earlier this year, it became the first video game ever screened at the Tribeca Film Festival.

If you know someone who loves the film noir detective movies of the 1940s and 50s or the old hardboiled crime novels, then this game is a must for them.

4.Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception — PlayStation 3, Rated T, $60

For those looking for a big, cinematic storytelling and gaming experience, the latest in the "Uncharted" franchise is sure to fit the bill.

This swashbuckling tale sweeps players up into the globe-trotting, treasure-hunting adventures of Nathan Drake  a modern-day Indiana Jones if ever there was one. This time around, players find Drake heading into the Arabian Desert on the hunt for the fabled city of Ubar  also known as the "Atlantis of the Sands."

Of course, there are plenty of twists, turns, narrow misses, intrigue and even a little romance along the way ... making it so this game is nothing but pure adventure-filled fun.

5.Legend of Zelda:  Skyward Sword — Wii, Rated E10+, $50

Speaking of adventure-filled fun ... there's nothing like experiencing a story that sweeps you up and takes you along on an epic voyage. And that's exactly what "Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" does ... while tossing in some top-notch Wii Motion Plus sword fighting to boot.

What's especially cool about this tale is that it's an origin story that not only takes us along on an enthralling journey with childhood friends (and Nintendo favorites) Link and Zelda but reveals the land of Hyrule's past.

The game's film-like cinematics do much to help deliver a narrative that's full of magical, family-friendly adventures and lively characters as well as some truly heartfelt moments.

Of course, this is just a short list of Games that feature top-notch stories. What do you think: Which games would you recommend for someone who likes a well-told tale?
